When riding public transportation, it goes without saying that the handicap, elderly, and mothers with babies always get first priority when it comes to seating.

Some buses even have special areas in the front, specifically designated for this purpose. While most decent people are more than happy to give up their seat to someone in need, not everyone always chooses to follow this unwritten social norm.

This is exactly what happened recently in Paris, where one bus driver’s actions are going viral after passengers on a crowded city bus refused to make room for a man in a wheelchair. Many are even going as far as calling the bus driver a hero, and rightfully so.

Disabled man, Francois Le Berre, who has multiple sclerosis, was waiting patiently at a bus stop in the suburbs of Paris. When the bus arrived, the driver put down the access ramp as you would expect, however, passengers on board refused to make space for him, leaving Le Berre stranded outside.

Once the driver noticed the problem, he decided to take matters into his own hands and set a precedent for all future passengers.

Francois Le Berre recalls the situation in a story he shared on his Facebook page:

“Yesterday while waiting for the bus in Paris, I laughed because no-one wanted to make room. When nobody moved the driver got up and said, ‘Terminus! Everybody off the bus!’ After that, the driver came to see me and said, ‘you and your helper, you can get on, and the others, you can wait for the next one!’ “

That’s right, the driver kicked everyone else off the bus, announcing to the passengers that the next bus comes in five minutes, and Le Berre and his helper got a private ride!

In an interview with France’s Huffington Post, he said that the bus driver told him that “everyone might need a wheel chair one day”, which is totally true. You never know when your own health might take a turn for the worst, leaving you in a similar situation.

While the two had never met before, the bus driver had simply decided to show him a little civility that day Le Berre said.

“I do not know his identity. Yet he did mention that he had no disabled family members, and that he just needed to be a little civic.”

Although the passengers were noticeably annoyed Le Berre recalled, the Internet can’t stop talking about the bus driver’s commendable actions. Le Berre’s story currently has over 1000 shares on Facebook, as well as over 5,000 retweets on Twitter.

“Bravo to the bus driver, but shame on the passengers.”

However, this story isn’t the first time a bus driver has gone out of their way to help someone with a handicap.
