Dancing is a highly creative form of self-expression. After all, when words fail, art becomes a refuge. Along with music, dancing allows people to communicate their thoughts and emotions in the best way they know how. It signifies more than just entertainment and talent. Because for some, to dance is to make a better choice: see life through a more optimistic perspective, have a stronger grasp on emotions, clear one’s head of disruptive thoughts.

Dance has quite a history, too!

The moves we see today are more than just mere dance steps thought up by talented choreographers. These steps not only shaped and preserved identity and history, but they too were once important parts of sacred and celebratory tradition, religious ceremonies, and social assemblies. Take jazz dancing.

Jazz came out of Africa. It’s embedded in the Africans’ rich culture. Because the dancing was always so rhythmic and expressive, it captured public imagination and prompted travelers to mirror the choreography and mix it with their own. While this unintentionally reduced the purpose and significance of jazz dancing to mere entertainment, African people continued to stand tall and defy the effects of cultural appropriation.

In fact, jazz dancing transcended decades and genres, inspiring many other dance types.

Maximizing the spacious, well-lit stage, Reagan waltzed, glided, and jumped along to the music without missing a beat. Apart from the unique costume and the steps, it was also Reagan’s fierceness that made the solo number more impressive.

She made eye contact with her audience, maintained her poise, and managed to look every bit the star that she is even as some steps proved more difficult than the rest.
