Nothing is more lifechanging for a woman than going through childbirth and becoming a mother. Whether it is her first or fifth child, new moms need to know that we care about them and seeing them too – not just their new bundle of joy. It is so easy to walk into a hospital room or their house with your arms held out waiting for a baby to be placed there.

Let’s instead replace those open arms with a hug for the new mom, first. Along with that hug, here are a few more ways that we can help new moms as they transition into their new life of motherhood.

Don’t be pushy.

Let’s face it – everyone loves to see a new baby! Many new parents have a group text ready to go to send out the exciting news to their friends and family members that the baby has arrived. Then we all start rolling in the doors of the hospital just hours after the new mom has just given birth.

Let’s give them a little space, shall we? Give the new family some time to bond with one another. Let them relax a little while after coming down from a huge, life-changing and sometimes, traumatic event. Wait a day or two before asking if it’s alright to visit. But for heaven’s sake – do not just show up. New moms need to get a little sleep before they even think about seeing anyone else.

Tell her she looks great.

New mama has just gone through nine months of her body changing without her control. She’s sore and tired and has been poked and prodded by more doctors and nurses than you can shake a stick at. She doesn’t feel like doing her hair.

She doesn’t have time to put makeup on. Some days, it’s even hard to make it through the shower or to get clean clothes on. But tell her she is beautiful. Tell her she is glowing. New mommies need a confidence boost after their whole life has been turned upside down.

Encourage her to hang in there.

Mothers of newborns have one of the hardest jobs around. They are up all night and up all day either trying to get their baby to sleep or worrying about them if they’re breathing once they do fall asleep. Diapers and bottles and pads and pacifiers and medicines and appointments – there are so many things weighing on a new mom’s mind that it can be more than overwhelming to get used to her new life.

Just remind her gently that she is doing a good job. That this hard season is going to pass. Remind her that she is going to make it. That she is strong. That she is capable of caring for her newborn better than anyone else. Show her and tell her that you love her and enjoy seeing her care for her new baby.
