There’s something deeply beautiful about a duet. Hearing two different tones of voices harmonizing together is one of the most pleasing sounds on this earth.
What makes a duet so special is that the two contrasting voices are very different from each other. Often, a duet is sung by a man and a woman, who take advantage of the man’s deeper tones and the woman’s ability to hit the high notes to produce something wonderful.
But not in this case. Meet Marcelito Pomoy, a singer from the Philippines. This young man has one of the most impressive vocal ranges we have ever heard – and is able to duet with himself, taking on both the man and the woman’s roles in popular songs.
One of Marcelito’s most memorable performances of this date comes live from Kuwait. The singer took to the stage and blew the audience away with his perfect rendition of the classic hit, “Beauty and the Beast” (“Tale as Old as Time”).
Originally produced in 1991, the love ballad “Beauty and the Beast” song shares the name of the film it was penned for.
Written by lyricist Howard Ashman and composer Alan Menken, the song was released as Beauty and the Beast’s only soundtrack, and was performed by Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson. If there was ever a song that was intended for a duet, it’s this one.
For this reason, Marcelito’s performance of both the tune’s male and female parts, known technically as tenor and soprano, is so incredible.
In the video, Marcelito looks completely at ease as he stands on stage while the familiar opening notes begin to play. He gives a shout to his audience, who scream in anticipation – and then he starts to sing.
Marcelito begins the classic hit as Celine Dion, and his voice is truly that of a female. This isn’t a man quite obviously putting on a high-pitched “woman’s” voice – Marcelito’s vocal cords are clearly designed for singing like this.
Not only is Marcelito’s voice in exceptional tune, he also hits the high notes with perfect clarity. His singing is breathtaking, and judging by the crowd’s response, they completely agree.
The fun stuff starts when Marcelito moves onto Peabo Bryson’s lines. He’s swiftly transformed from feminine to “macho man”, and it truly is an astonishing feat.
Like his “female” singing, Marcelito’s “male” singing is spot-on. His powerful singing voice has the crowd silenced in awe.
Even when Marcelito begins to switch voices line-by-line, his two personas are clearly defined – and equally as impressive. This must have taken him some serious practice, though it’s clear that a lot of his abilities come from natural talent.
A man like Marcelito couldn’t possibly stay out of the public eye forever. He had previously won “Philippines Got Talent” in 2012, but he was destined for greater things.
Things really took off for the singer when he appeared on The Ellen Show in 2018, and fans of America’s Got Talent will be familiar with his involvement in this year’s 2020 series.
The majority of the biggest singers today aren’t blessed with such an impressive vocal rage. Despite taking 4th place on America’s Got Talent, it’s unlikely that Marcelito will fade into the background anytime soon.
Taking to Facebook after his final performance, Marcelito reached out to his fans, writing, “you just don’t know how happy I am realizing how much you love me”, and thanking fans for their support.
