With the increasing number of people getting sick, it’s not surprising to find most of us looking for ways to keep ourselves healthy. We try to eat healthier foods, live a more active lifestyle, and reduce stress.

One group of people in Colorado, however, has a different way of keeping themselves healthy.

They use their own urine to treat a wide range of health issues- from skin problems to improving their overall health and well-being.

Once in a month, the Urine Therapy of Colorado holds a meeting.

The members go to the Downtown Boulder Public Library where they spend about an hour and a half to discuss the benefits of their urine to their health.

Each meeting is generally filled with amusing reports. For example, one particular member reported using his own urine to manage the eczema on his hands when he couldn’t get a hold of his ointments and creams.

Another member use her urine to treat not just skin problems but almost every ailments she has. In fact, she had been using her own urine since 1983.

The woman, Indira bhatt Gupta, shared:

“In the morning that is the first thing I do. Let some part go, take the middle part, put it in my eyes, put it in my face, and just have some Chai in the morning.”

Urine therapy isn’t a new practice.

In fact, it has been around since ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. It’s been used to treat almost everything- from acne to cancer.

Tons of books have been written about it, too. They highlight the benefits of urine therapy and how it could be useful in detecting diseases, too. Back then, it was believed that doctors used to test for diabetes by tasting urine.

While there are people who believe in urine therapy, there are also people who find the idea a bit absurd and weird.

This is because urine is technically the product of your kidneys filtering out toxins. It has most of the bad stuff that came out of your blood system.

Yes, you got that part right. Based on this study, urine isn’t really sterile.

Furthermore, according to Helen Andrews of the British Dietetic Association:

“There are no health benefits to drinking your own urine, and in fact I think it could be quite detrimental. Each time you put it back it will come out again even more concentrated and that is not good for health as it could damage the gut.”

This idea, however, doesn’t mean that it’s impossible for you to drink your urine without any negative effects. If you’re a generally healthy person, you shouldn’t have problems drinking a few cups of it. You won’t get sick from it right away.

Those who have been stranded in places where they have no access to water rely on their own urine for survival. While it’s not ideal, it can help prevent dehydration up to a certain point. Take note that urine also has salt content that can accelerate dehydration, too.

Whether or not you buy the idea, it’s completely up to you. However, if you want to be extra sure, consider setting up an appointment with your doctor to talk about your health and how drinking your own urine can affect your general well-being.
