Weddings have been a sacred event in the lives of humans for centuries. This is why the wedding ceremony is packed full of traditions that vary between cultures and have changed over the years. Brides who wear white dresses along with something borrowed, something blue, something old, and something new— is just one common modern wedding tradition.
Another common wedding tradition we hold is making sure that the groom doesn’t see his bride in her wedding dress until the big day.
This is one of those wedding superstitions we don’t even think about, yet most of us follow without question.
A groom seeing a bride in her wedding dress before the wedding day is presumed to be bad luck.
According to Bridal Guide, the tradition started when arranged marriages were custom and the bride and groom weren’t allowed to see each other before the wedding at all, regardless of what they were wearing.
Since a wedding was more of a business deal between two families back then, the bride’s parents feared that the groom would back out if he met his bride before the wedding day and didn’t find her attractive.
Thus, the deal would fall through.
Calling off the wedding would cast shame on the bride and her family, so betrothed couples were only allowed to meet at the wedding ceremony so the groom couldn’t back out at the last minute. This is also why a bride wears a veil, so the groom can’t see her face until it’s too late.
Not very romantic!
We now continue this tradition but not for fear of our grooms running away. It’s more of a romantic thing nowadays. We know our grooms love their brides and want to spend the rest of their lives with them.
However, keeping the groom from seeing his bride in her dress just makes the event a little more special and exciting.
Especially since lots of couples don’t ordinarily see each other as dressed up as they do on their wedding day. It sort of makes an event out of it so you consciously acknowledge how beautiful and special your significant other is to you.
Couples often take their formal pictures before their ceremony while they are freshly done-up. But many still make a special moment out of the bride revealing her dress to the groom.
Some grooms anxiously await this moment and cherish it all their lives. Just like the grooms in the video below.
