Synchronized swimming is probably one of the most colorful and creative water sports out there. It’s quite intricate in that it requires a lot from athletes mentally and physically. Plus, choreography and routines take a lot of time to perfect, too.

That wasn’t really a surprise. The team invested a lot of their time and effort into perfecting their performance in Montreal. With colorful costumes, they were able to capture everyone’s attention

The group of 8 women lined up on the poolside. Half of them were wearing Indian hats while the other half wore cowboy hats. Apart from that, they have makeup on their faces, too. The women with cowboy hats had mustaches drawn on the faces while those with Indian hats have half of their faces painted as well.

After completing their first pose, a drumroll was played and they jumped into the water one by one. Their actual performance began.

Their routine was quite dazzling.

Synchronized swimming is an underrated yet difficult sport.

It’s only right that it’s included in the Olympic games.

Athletes who aspire to be really good Olympic synchronized swimmers may have to train for about 8 hours a day for 6 days in a week. That means that they train longer than any other sports in the Olympics.

The swimmers don’t just train in the water. They also spend a lot of time stretching and conditioning their body. They do Pilates, lift weights, perform ballet, and do gymnastics, too.

With all the things they have to do to prepare for their routine, synchronized swimmers can be considered as some of the most well-rounded and strongest athletes in today’s Olympic games.

To win competitions, however, these swimmers are required to complete a number of movements in order. They also need to perform a variety of figures while staying in sync with the swimmers around them. To do that, they need to know how to count in the mind at the same pace as everyone in the team.

They train through an exercise known as land drilling. They go through their routine on land. They perform specific positioning and arm movements so that they can practice their routine even without the weightlessness they experience when they are in the water.

Surprisingly, synchronized swimmers aren’t allowed to touch the bottom of the pool with their feet. Doing that would mean disqualification. To stay afloat, they need to constantly move their feet like an egg beater. With so much power in their kick, it’s possible for them to hit each other during the competition. This is why most athletes in this sport end up with bruises and swollen legs after their performance.

Truly, the women in Canada’s synchronized swimming team are an inspiration for the effort and hard work they put into making their country proud.
