Sandy Brooks had been preparing for a more and more minimalist lifestyle as she aged. She kept downsizing into smaller homes, but after she retired she decided to take the plunge and move into a real tiny house!
It may look small from the outside, but inside she has everything she needs!
She even has space for her 5 year old dog Zoe, who’s loving her new life in the tiny house.
Zoe has some of her own spaces including a bed under the dishwasher, a spot under Sandy’s bed, and a footstool where she likes to curl up for a nap.
She’s a tiny dog so she’s well-suited to the tiny house!
Sandy and Zoe live in a village dedicated to tiny homes in Durango, Colorado, where she is surrounded by likeminded people.
The house has more amenities than my apartment – including a full-sized fridge, dishwasher, and laundry machine. I would kill for a washer dryer! This is true luxury.
Everything is very well organized and no space has gone un-used. Even the stairs up to her bedroom double as drawers!
There’s a secret compartment behind a hanging piece of art, revealing a small nook for storage. Very 007.
And the painting isn’t just there as a decoy door. Sandy is a big fan of artwork so her home is well decorated with her favourite pieces, as well as a lot of healthy house plants.
She even has a beautiful butterfly piece installed on the outside of her home that reminds Sandy of her late sister.
There are two metal dragonflies hanging above her front door, which have lead her friends and family to refer to her house simply as “the dragonfly”. So cute!
Her bedroom is on the second floor of the open-concept plan, and features a regular sized double bed and lots of shelving space so she can easily organize her clothing.
“I had some friends come about 3 weeks ago who had not seen my tiny house. And they walked in the door and the first words were ‘wow, this is really nice, I could live here too.'” – Sandy Brooks
No kidding, I agree with her friends!
Sandy says living in a tiny home has been a great choice, and she’s helping inspire others to do the same by making it look so easy!
Her video has racked up more than 700,000 views, and has been showered in heartfelt comments from viewers.
She left viewers with some quick tips for anyone thinking of moving into a tiny house of their own.
“You need to have really good insulation, you need to make sure that it’s built properly, and that it’s going to be something that you really love. I hope to live in mine for a very long time. I’m loving my new life!” – Sandy Brooks
I for one am going to start downsizing my possessions as soon as possible! What a great idea for retirement, or really for any stage of life.
It’s never too late to make a change!
