J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series has created a legion of Potter obsessed fans that span generations. These “Potterheads” are so in love with the films that they know just about everything there is to know about the series. Thanks to Rowling’s Pottermore website, Potterheads know even more about the series than is revealed in the books and movies.
But even Potterheads haven’t caught on to everything there is to know about the world of Harry Potter. There are some things that have slipped by them. But they are all hiding in plain sight.
There are lots of details in the Harry Potter series that you probably haven’t noticed. Are you a superfan who thinks this just isn’t possible? Check out our slideshow and find out.
Here are 40 awesome details that you probably never noticed were hidden in the Harry Potter series:
1) This is What the House Colors Really Represent
Everyone knows that Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy has four different houses that each have their own house colors. They are Gryffindor, which is red and gold, Hufflepuff, which is yellow and black, Ravenclaw, blue and bronze, and Slytherin, green and silver. But you might not know that each of the house’s colors is meant to represent one of the elements.
“The four Hogwarts houses have a loose association with the four elements, and their colors were chosen accordingly,” Rowling wrote on the official Pottermore site. “Gryffindor (red and gold) is connected to fire; Slytherin (green and silver) to water; Hufflepuff (yellow and black, representing wheat and soil) to earth; and Ravenclaw (blue and bronze; sky and eagle feathers) to air.”
For example, everyone knows that students are sorted into the four houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry…

2) George Forgetting Fred Isn’t There
We all remember one of the most exciting moments in all of the Harry Potter films when we learn that Harry is actually alive in
Deathly Hallows Part 2. You might not have noticed that in this scene George turns to share his excitement with his twin brother Fred. It’s just an immediate reaction since Fred was always by his side. Except that he isn’t there because Fred died in the battle of Hogwarts.
In the
Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry’s scar starts to hurt when he meets eyes with Snape for the first time. We later learn that this isn’t because of Snape. But you probably didn’t realize it was actually because Professor Quirrel’s head was turned around and Lord Voldemort was living on the back of his head, which means it was directly facing Harry.
4) Voldemort’s Fading Robes
Voldemort became weaker as each Horcrux was destroyed. The movie made sure to subtly show this on screen. They did this by fading the color in Voldemort’s robes to show that he was fading away.
Did you know? Voldemort's robes faded in colour everytime a horcrox was destroyed, to give an impression that he was slowly fading away!! Follow WhatGeek Fandom for more!!

5) Snape’s Secret Message
Snape secretly references Harry’s mom to him when he first meets Harry. He asks Harry what the results of adding powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood would be. The asphodel is a lily, which was Harry’s deceased mother’s name, and wormwood reflects loss and absence.
6) Anne Boleyn is a Witch
Henry VIII’s wife was executed after being accused of being a witch. Whether or not she practiced witchcraft in real life is unproven, but it’s true in the world of Harry Potter. Her portrait hangs in the staircase at Hogwarts.
Has anyone noticed that there is a picture of Anne Boleyn in Harry Potter movie?

7) Snape Was Sorted Too Soon
When Severus Snape dies we see a Gryffindor scarf hanging in the background. Some say this was because Snape died like a Gryffindor and was sorted into the wrong house. Even Dumbledore said: “Sometimes I think we sort too soon.”
8) Darker the Movie, Darker the Intro
As the Harry Potter movies go on, they become progressively dark as the war between dark and light wizards gains begins and culminates in war. This is represented in each of the movie’s intros. The Warner Bros. logo gets darker in each movie.
9) No Dragons Were Harmed
One of the best parts about the
Goblet of Fire was learning about dragons. But don’t worry, no dragons were harmed during the making of that film. The end credits of the movie says so.
Throught all of the Harry Potter, Harry refers to Severus Snape as only “Snape” instead of “Professor Snape.” Except in the last movie. Harry starts to call him “Professor Snape” after he learns the truth about Snape from the pensieve in
Deathly Hallows: Part 2.
Neville explains, in the
Sorcerer’s Stone, that a Remembrall turns red when you’ve forgotten something. But he doesn’t remember what he’s forgotten. He’s the only one in the scene not wearing a robe, so some say that’s what he forgot. But his robes were actually right next to him. He just forgot to put it on.
It's National "I Forgot" Day today and we couldn't help but think of Neville and his Remembrall. What do you think he forgot?

12) Dementors Personify Depression
Dementors were meant to be a physical manifestation of depression, according to J.K. Rowling.
“It’s so difficult to describe [depression] to someone who’s never been there, because it’s not sadness,” Rowling said in an interview with Oprah Winfrey. “I know sadness. Sadness is to cry and to feel. But it’s that cold absence of feeling—that really hollowed-out feeling. That’s what dementors are.”

13) McGonagall Quittditch Star
Professor Minerva McGonagall was a Quidditch player during her time as a Hogwarts student and won an award in 1971 for her skils on the Quidditch field. Her name can be seen in the movie on a Quidditch trophy next to Jame Potter’s name.
“Minerva played for Gryffindor Quidditch team in her student years, in which she proved to be gifted. However, she suffered a nasty fall in her final year: a foul during the Gryffindor versus Slytherin match which would decide the Quidditch Cup winner. This event left her with a concussion, several broken ribs, and a lifelong desire to see Slytherin crushed on the Quidditch pitch,” according to Harry Potter Wiki.

14) Harry’s Father Figures
Since Harry’s dad passed away, two other characters took on the role of dad, Rubeus Hagrid and Albus Dumbledore. Their colors, red and white, symbolized their personalities.
“Where my two characters were concerned, I named them for the alchemical colors to convey their opposing but complementary natures: Red meaning passion (or emotion), white for asceticism; Hagrid being the earthy, warm, and physical man, lord of the forest; Dumbledore the spiritual theoretician, brilliant, idealized, and somewhat detached,” Rowling wrote on Pottermore. “Each is a necessary counterpoint to the other as Harry seeks father figures in his new world.”

15) Scarves and Personalities
We first meet Harry, Ron, and Hermione in the
Sorcerer’s Stone. We get to learn how Hermione is tightlaced, Ron is the most laid back one, and Harry is somewhere in the middle. This is shown in the way they wear their scarves.
16) Names Give Characters Away
A character’s name reveals a lot about them in the Harry Potter series. Remus Lupin, who is a werewolf, gets his name from the Roman Romulus and Remus myth about two brothers raised by wolves. Lupin is derived from the Latin word “lupinus” meaning wolfish. Sirius, in Sirius Black’s name, is the “dog star” in astronomy and part of the Canis Major constellation. Black’s is an animagus and can turn into a dog.

We first meet
Nagini, Voldemort’s pet snake which is also a Horcrux and also Maledictus, in
Goblet of Fire. She actually is the first character we see in the film. You can see her slithering in the Warner Bros. logo.

Harry Potter is in a candle lit room when he gets sucked into Tom Riddle’s Diary in the
Chamber of Secrets. When he enters the diary, everything goes black and white. But you can still see the candle flickering on his body.
19) Lupin’s Werewolfism is a Metaphor for HIV
“Remus Lupin’s affliction was a conscious reference to blood-borne diseases such as the HIV infection, with the attendant stigma,” Rowling wrote on Pottermore. “The potion Snape brews him is akin to the antiretroviral that will keep him from developing the ‘full-blown’ version of his illness. The sense of ‘apartness’ that the management of a chronic condition can impose on its sufferers was an important part of Lupin’s character.”
“Remus Lupin was supposed to be the H.I.V. metaphor. It was someone who had been infected young, who suffered stigma,…

Harry Potter sort of takes on the role of Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher in
Order of the Phoenix. You may have noticed that he wear button down shirts and sweaters just like Harry’s favorite Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Remus Lupin. It was Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliff’s idea to do this.
21) Hedwig Represents Childhood Comforts
Hedwig was the only friend Harry had when he lived at 4 Privet Drive with his aunt and uncle, the Dursleys. Hedwig provided Harry with comfort and security. Her death symbolized the end of those things.
“The loss of Hedwig represented a loss of innocence and security,” Rowling said. “Voldemort killing her marked the end of childhood.”
There’s a poster in the cafe seen of
Deathly Hollows: Part I. It’s for a play called
Equus. It starred Daniel Radcliffe and Richard Griffiths who played Uncle Vernon Dursley.

23) Bathrooms are Super Important
Bathrooms show up in a lot in the Harry Potter series. A bathroom is the entrance to the Chamber of Secrets, where Harry solves a Triwizard Tournament puzzle in the bath, where Harry battles Draco in the
Half-Blood Prince, and are portals to the Ministry of Magic.

24) Newt Scamander on the Marauder’s Map
Technically, the first time we meet Newt Scamander of the
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them series is actually in the
Prisoner of Azakaban. He’s spotted on the Maurader’s Map. That would have made him 96-year-old during his visit to Hogwarts. There are lots of theories as to why he was there: for Buckbeak’s trial or to learn about the Basilisk.
Did you notice Hermione’s hair growing in
Deathly Hallows: Part I? It keeps growing longer. This is to show how long she, Ron, and Harry have been traveling to find the Horcruxes.
26) Wizards Read Stephen Hawking
Even though wizards use magic, they’re still into science. A wizard can be seen reading “A Brief History of Time” by Stephen Hawking in
Prisoner of Azkaban. That wizard is played by Stone Roses lead singer Ian Brown.

Wizards eat cereal too. Apparently, they have their own versions of muggle cereal (or is it the other way around?). Instead of Cheerios, they have Cheeri-Owls.
28) Seven Rocks for Seven Horcruxes
When we see Tom Riddle’s bedroom in the orphanage, there are seven rocks on his windowsill. This is a bit of foreshadowing. It’s symbolic of Voldemort splitting his soul seven times into seven Horcruxes.
29) Snape Re-Directs Curse
While it seems like Snape is working with the Death Eaters in the
Dealthy Hallows: Part 2, he’s still helping the Order of the Phoenix. It’s apparent when he is battling McGonagall. He’s re-directing her spells so that they hit the Death Eaters.
30) Harry’s Eye on the Snitch
Do you watch movies to the end of the credits? If you did, than you probably noticed what happened to Gilderoy Lockhart at the end of
Chamber of Secrets. He ended up writing another book about his memory begin blanked out and forgetting who he was.
Did you know that at the end of the second movie credits, there is a scene showing the fate of Gilderoy Lockhart?

31) “He Who Must Not Be Named”
Voldemort wasn’t listed as Voldemort in the end credits of
Sorcerer’s Stone. Richard Bremmer’s character was listed as what he was refered to in the movie. And that is “He Who Must Not Be Named.”
We all know that Lucius Malfoy was sent to Azkaban for working as a Death Eater after trying to steal the prophecy. Voldemore ended up breaking him out of prison in 1997 but that doesn’t mean he entirely left Azkaban behind. You can see his tattoo from Azkaban on his neck in
Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

Gilderoy Lockhart is known as a hearttrob for his good looks. But they aren’t entirely all his good look. He wears a big and you can see it on his desk in
Chamber of Secrets.
In the Chambers of Secrets, you can spot Gilderoy Lockhart's second wig.

34) Directors Mexican Heritage
You can find a fountain with statues of an eagle and a snake in the courtyard in
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. This was a nod to director Alfonos Cuaron’s Mexican heritage. Both of the animals are found on the Mexican flag.
35) Ministry of Magic Access Code
Apparently the Ministry of Magic isn’t that big on security. There access code is 62442. It spells out “magic.”
The secret code Arthur Weasley must dial into a telephone keypad to access the Ministry of Magic is 62442. The letters underneath those numbers on a standard phone spell out the word ‘magic’.~Nymphadora Tonks

36) Molly Weasley’s Clock
Parents always want to know where their kids are and that they are safe. That’s why Molly Weasley has her magical clock. But one of the clock’s options is “prison” which is most parents fear.
37) Deathly Hallows Revealed
You might not realize, but the first time we see the Deathly Hallows is in
Goblet of Fire. The Deathly Hallows symbol is a triangle with a circle in the middle and line through the middle. The symbol appears as Dumbledore is looking through some glass at artifacts in his office.
None of us can forget the monstorous three headed dog Fluffy from the
Sorcerer’s Stone. Hagrid tells us that bought Fluffy “off a Greek chappie.” This might not have set off any bells at that time, but it makes sense because Fluffy is based on Cerebrus of Greek mythology which is the three headed dog that guards the gates of hell.
In our latest episode we discuss some of the #fantasticbeasts in Harry Potter 1 including three headed dogs like Fluffy and his Greek companion Cerberus.http://ow.ly/Ej1d50vWxsP

Did you notice the bartender in
Prisoner of Azkaban? He’s doing magic while busing a table. He makes a bottle disappear.
We never see Dumbledore’s bedroom, but it exists. It is directly adjoined to his office. Even thought it is never shown in the movies, Dumbledore’s bedroom was built and decorate with as much care as any other set on the film.
Dumbledore's bedroom that never got shown in the movies! It must have been frustrating being the designer of that…
