It’s a challenge to wear the right make-up for any occasion. You have to blend the right tones, make sure it goes well with your skin tone, your clothes, your hair, and the place you’re going to.
And it’s even more challenging to keep it on all day, especially when it’s hot outside or you’re caught in a downpour or when you want to go swimming.
There is a lot of waterproof make-up available in stores but sometimes you just want to make your own make-up waterproof.
And, in case it still happens to smudge or smear off, there are ways to fix them quickly.
Before anything else, great make-up always needs to start with a good base and we’re not talking about foundation or primer. We’re talking about skin that has been taken care of with a great skin care routine. First of all, most importantly, you need to know your skin type so you can figure out the best way to take care of it. This is especially important if you have oily skin since oily skin can be a problem to keep your make-up on all day.
Our skin renews every month and if we don’t exfoliate, our skin becomes more prone to wrinkles, becomes drier, and we can break out more often. And if we apply make-up on “old skin,” it won’t stay on long. So have a good skincare routine and practice it regularly.
When you apply lipstick on lips that haven’t been exfoliated, it might not stay on too long, especially since your lips will crack or flake. It’ll only take a
short moment to do it. Use a lip exfoliator or make your own (sugar + coconut oil). Use a soft toothbrush and gently scrub lips in a circular motion. Rinse and apply a moisturizing lip balm.
4. Always Use The Right Make-Up
This is why it’s important to know your skin type and what your skin really needs. When you use the wrong make-up, it won’t stay on long. And it’s always best to invest in high-quality brands. This doesn’t always mean expensive brands. There are good quality brands available in drugstores but you’ll just need to do more research on recommendations.
5. Look For Water-Resistant Make-Up
Water-resistant make-up works almost the same way as waterproof make-up but they’re lighter. They’re also gentler on the skin and will allow your skin to breathe more.
When you want your make-up to last longer, especially during the summer, make sure to use oil-free products. These products are absorbed more quickly and they also provide intensive hydration. These are also ideal for most skin types so they’re always a good option for anyone.
It’s better to apply and layer light make-up than to just apply one layer of heavy make-up. This will make it last longer and will also make it appear more natural.
Always use a primer if you want your make-up to last longer in any condition and in any season. It creates a smooth base for your make-up, prevents shine, and provides an extra boost of hydration for your skin. So yes, primers are non-negotiable.
This is true, especially during the summer or when you’re going to be under the sun for hours. Sunscreen will help your skin stay healthier and protects your skin from the harmful UV rays. Plus it helps keep your complexion even and protect your skin from premature aging, too.
10. Use The Right Make-Up Tools
Brushes aren’t always the best tools, especially since it doesn’t provide full coverage. Velour puffs or sponges work better. Using a puff or sponge mattifies the make-up and leaves make-up wherever it lands. Just to make sure to press the puff on the face, don’t scrub it on.
Cream formula holds better on the skin than powder. And cream formulas will stay on even when you take a dip in the pool.
And we don’t mean lighter tones. Use lighter alternatives to foundation and concealer, especially during the summer. For foundation, try BB Primer Creams or Tinted Moisturizer. For concealer, try a peach or pink lipliner to cover up acne scars or deep pores.
13. Use A Wax Gel To Seal Eyebrows
To make your eyebrow make-up last longer, despite contact with oil, sweat, and water, use a wax gel. Plus it also keeps all the hair on your eyebrow in place. Just a few quick strokes in an upward motion is all you need to set it.
Use an eye gel, instead of heavy eye cream. Eye gel will also moisturize the skin around your eyes but is not oily. And if you’re lucky, you can find a brand that will also reduce the appearance of wrinkles and puffiness.
If you want your eyeshadow to last, don’t use powder. You can use an eyeshadow crayon instead. It’s got a thicker consistency so it will last longer. If you still want to use your powder eyeshadow, you can set it on top of the eyeshadow crayon.
16. Use Cream Eyeshadow To Set Eyeliner
Use your usual eyeliner and then set it with a cream shadow of the same tone. You can find several brands who sell waterproof shadow sticks. Just make sure they’re the same color of your eyeliner.
Most people tend to apply a second coat of waterproof mascara just to be sure. But then that double-layer jut makes it harder to remove. To make your mascara still waterproof but easier to remove, apply one layer of non-waterproof mascara first then apply a layer of waterproof mascara.
Powder blush can smudge or fade. Using a cheek tint will last all day or longer until you remove it. And you can still add more color by adding your powder blush on top of it. Even if it smudges, the cheek tint is still in place and you’ll still have color on your cheeks.
19. Wear Lip Balm With SPF
Lip balms protect the lips from drying out and prevents cracks and flakes. It also hydrates lips and seals in moisture. This helps makes lipstick last longer.
Lipsticks stays on longer when they’ve got something to hold on to. Before applying lipstick, map it out first. Frame your lips then map out the cupids bow and corners. Apply your lipstick with a brush.
Matte lipsticks are good for any season. It’ll stay on until you remove it. And if you choose the right one, it’ll even provide more moisture.
Finish off your make-up with a setting spray. It prevents the make-up from sliding off and keep it on.
You can also use a setting powder to keep your make-up on your face. Make sure to use a puff or sponge and press it on your face to set it.
24. Keep Your Make-Up With You
Always keep your make-up with you, even just the basics, so you can easily touch up your make-up. If you can’t bring all of it, make sure to bring your setting powder and lipstick to do your retouches.
25. Bring Your Touch-Up Tools
If you don’t have any space for your make-up in your bag, you can bring a couple of tools to help. Bring extra sponge or a cotton bud to help with the smudges.
26. Touch Up With Sun Protection Powder
Touch up with sun protection powder. It won’t add heaviness to your make-up and it also helps absorb sweat and oil.
27. Freshen Up With Cooling Facial Wipes
You can use facial wipes to wipe off smudges. Be sure to have a sponge ready to touch up your make-up again.
28. Blot When Your Face Becomes Shiny
When your face becomes shiny, blot the area with blotting paper. Be careful when blotting and just press firmly on the shiny spots. If you don’t have blotting paper, you can use a paper towel.
29. Fix With Make-Up Remover
There are times when even the most powerful waterproof make-up can still smudge. No need to fret when you come prepared. Bring make-up remover in a travel-sized bottle and use a cotton bud to fix the smudge.
30. Stop Touching Your Face
Stop touching your face. It can smear or smudge your make-up. If you absolutely need to, make sure you have a mirror handy so you can immediately touch up the parts that were smudged.
